My Grandpa,
A.J. (Art) Scheffler

Grandpa's Family

On October 7, 2000 my Grandpa, Art Scheffler will have reached the age of 80. To celebrate this momentous occasion we wanted to do something special for him. This page is my own little "memory album" of one of the things I will always link to Grandpa in my mind- Horses.
At left- Grandpa when he was a boy (standing holding the foal) with his brother Leo on the mare and sister Tillie in the barn window.
At right -Grandpa standing with my Dad- Jim Scheffler, Bob Rauh, and Frank Frechek Grandpa's nephews.

Me, Marna Jean, at about 6 months old on Mom's horse Buddy with Grandpa. Like most little girls, I always loved the horses (still do!) Soon as I was big enough to voice my opinion while taking one of our little rides I did. When mom came to get me off of the horse I said ,"No!, Grandpa go the other way!"

In our minds Grandpa meant, horses and fun. He would sing "Strawberry Roan" to us when we checked on the cattle, take us for rides, put our saddles on for us, and answer questions. In the house there was "draw me a horse", and helping us to figure out how the harness and tack fit on our toy horses.

When he thought I was big enough I had a pony of my own. This was a palomino Welsh/Shetland gelding by the name of Trigger. We rode him with a saddle, but Grandpa soon acquired a cart and harness for him as well. He would put the cart to use through many later ponies as well. One year for the Fourth of July, Grandpa gave pony cart rides for a quarter each and wore out 2 or 3 ponies, but also made enough money to really help the civic club pay for the fireworks that year.
When I outgrew my pony, Grandpa helped to break my new horse I named Mercury- a black Gelding. He had a few "problems" especially at first- he always wanted to start off at a run when you mounted him. You can see from the picture he's still pretty green.

Well, that's a few of my memories with Grandpa- I'm sure everyone has their own special memories of him, and I could go on for pages, myself- but instead I'd like you to add you memories to this special page for him.
The links to his guestbook are below- Won't you please sign?
Thanks,
Marna Jean Davis - Art's Granddaughter
